ILI MUNIRAH

“When I take the public transport in Singapore, I realise not everyone is courteous. Majority of the time when I take the train, no one offers me a seat. I try to remind myself that I’m young and strong.”

One act of kindness can have a ripple effect
There was this one particular incident that stood out. I was on my way to work one morning & as usual, the train station was ridiculously crowded with people. People were waiting in line to get into the train. I was lucky I even got into the train. It didn’t bother me that I didn’t get a seat. Unexpectedly, a Caucasian man asked aloud to the whole cabin if someone would give up their seat to a pregnant woman. 3 passengers immediately stood up & offered their seats to me. I was really touched by his thoughtfulness & thanked him.

I couldn’t stop smiling as I walked out of the train. It was by far one of my most favourite train ride because for once, I felt valued by the people around me.

When I found out I was pregnant, there were a lot of things that went through my mind. One of which was if I’d be able to carry around the extra weight. Also I wondered how people would react towards me in public. The only thing I would expect from the people around me is common courtesy.

In barely 3 months time, I’ll be welcoming my little one to this beautiful world. I hope that he’ll be surrounded by loving and kind people.
